Isfahan became the epitome of Safavid Iran during the reign of Abbas and his successors. European visitors to Isfahan were amazed by the city’s reconstruction and saw signs of the Safavid political elite becoming more Iranian. Since then, “Isfahan, half of the world” has become a term used to describe the city. Shah Abbas built many buildings in Isfahan and was himself one of the city’s architects.
The city is located on a flat plain at an altitude of 1,570 meters above sea level, and its origin is attributed to the Zayandeh Rood River. The city is famous for its unique Iranian architecture, covered bridges, mosques, and minarets, which has led to its nickname in popular culture, Isfahan, half of the world.
