Let’s learn more about Expo on the pretext of Expo 2025 Japan.

Expo is derived from the word Exposition and is an event that is held every five years and each time in a different country. Today, Expos are the third most important event in the world after the World Cup and the Olympic Games, and they have chosen the name Olympics for the Culture of Nations. This event aims to unite and integrate people and innovations from all over the world in order to solve the global problems of humanity.

This international exhibition is designed to showcase the past, present and future of countries, where social, economic, scientific achievements, cultural background and development prospects of countries are displayed. Hosting an Expo is very useful for the economic, social and infrastructural development of the host cities and international trade and cooperation. Therefore, all member countries are willing to host this exhibition. So far, about 60 Expos have been held in 24 cities.

History of the Expo The idea of holding Expo exhibitions was proposed in 1844 in Paris, under the title of the French Industrial Exhibition, which paved the way for the continuation of such exhibitions at the international level under the name of the World Exhibition.

The exhibitions held in 1851 were influenced by the Industrial Revolution and colonial ambition. One of the notable points in the pavilions of that time is the pavilions of colonial countries, some of which were colonies of those countries and the traditions and cultures of their colonial countries.

Following the First and Second World Wars, the use of technology had the opposite result, and from that time on, a decision was made to reform the use of technology. Because technology can be destructive and its use must be done with social and political responsibilities in mind.

The first official Expo exhibition was held in 1851 in the Crystal Palace glass complex in London, which was known as the largest exhibition of innovative scientific and industrial achievements of all nations, and our country Iran also participated in it by order of Amir Kabir. The exhibition showcased over 100,000 inventions from the Industrial Revolution, making the Expo a landmark tradition and defining the history of the Expo.

Paris has hosted Expos several times, most notably in 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was built. In Chicago, Expo 1893 featured the world’s first Ferris wheel, which later inspired urban design and public spaces. These exhibitions not only impressed visitors but also gave new directions to industry and architecture. These structures inspired artists and architects for generations to come and are still recognized as symbols of human creativity.

After World War II, the shape of international relations changed and international relations between different countries increased. In 1958, Brussels hosted the Expo, which focused on the peaceful use of atomic energy and introduced the Atomium as a symbol of science and technology. Then, Seattle showed the world in 1962 that the future of humanity was linked to technology and space by building the Space Tower and was about “Man in the Space Age”. The Montreal Expo in 1967, with the slogan “Man and the World”, emphasized the need for human harmony with nature and the surrounding environment, and the first Expo in Asia was held in Osaka, Japan in 1970, which addressed the issues of technology and global harmony with the slogan “Progress and Harmony for Humanity”. This event became a symbol of the rapid growth of Japan and the country that had the most events.

By creating a platform for peaceful discussion and dialogue, the Expo has developed many talents and put many countries and companies on the world stage, while the number of participating countries has increased year by year. In Brussels, 39 pavilions were held, Montreal 62, Osaka 78 pavilions, Seville 109 pavilions, Hanover 155 pavilions and Shanghai 193 pavilions.

The 1992 Expo in Seville, Spain, focused on the “Age of Discovery,” looking back at humanity’s historic journeys and achievements. The 2000 Hannover Expo focused on “Man, Nature and Technology,” drawing global attention to environmental challenges.

The last Expo was held in Dubai. Postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Expo showcased a new future of global cooperation under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.”
